MAURIZIO CELLURA
Associate Professor of Environmental Physics, University of Palermo
Two years ago Maurizio Cellura led a team of researchers in a project that calculated the cost to the global environment of producing one bottle of red wine from the small, award-winning Milazzo winery in Italy. Researchers remained on-site at the winery for the better part of a year. Their observations included many surprises and would end up changing the way Milazzo would approach winemaking.
Cellura was born in Licata, Italy and in 1988 earned a degree in civil engineering (summa cum laude) from the University of Palermo. In the following years he earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Applied Physics from the Department of Energy and Physical Applications (1994). He was External Professor of Thermal Plants from 1997 to 1999 in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Reggio Calabria and became Assistant Professor of Environmental Physics in 2000 at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Palermo before becoming Associate Professor of Environmental Physics in December 2002.
